Dan Harold Sumner
Moved to Heaven, surrounded by family on Saturday, July 17, 2021, Dan Harold Sumner,91, loving husband of the late Joyce McAfee Sumner. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, July 21, 2021 at 11’o’clock at Chance and Hydrick Chapel with Rev. Marvin Patrick officiating. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Chance and Hydrick Funeral home one hour prior to the service.
Dan was born and raised in Washington County. During his childhood years Dan enjoyed working on the Sumner farm. At the age of 21, Dan joined the United States Army. He married the love of his life, Joyce McAfee Sumner in 1951. They moved to Augusta, Georgia and began a family. Dan was a supervisor at the DuPont Power Plant/Westinghouse/Savannah River Site and retired after 39 years of service. Dan and Joyce were married for 49 years before her passing in 2000. Dan loved his family. His hugs were contagious and he hugged every friend and stranger. He greeted everyone with a “Howdy.” Dan and Joyce loved to travel with family and friends. He loved turkey hunting, fishing, water/snow skiing, watching Jeopardy/Wheel of Fortune, having fish fries. He was a jack of trades and a master story teller. Dan was a longtime member of Crestview Baptist.
Survivors include his three children; Wanda Sumner Martin (Luke), Hephzibah; Danny Blake Sumner (Sandy), Macon; Barry Eugene Sumner (Susan), Martinez; 1 sister, Carllene Veal, Atlanta; six grandchildren; Brandi Martin James (Troy), Holley Martin Holbert (Mac), Laura Sumner Poarch (Derek), Lindsey Sumner Bauer (Nick), Courtney Sumner, and Bethany Sumner; six great grandchildren; Mary Joyce James, Del Wade James (Bubba), Ashlynn Poarch, Davis Poarch, Abigail Bauer, and Luke Aiden Holbert. He was preceded in death by his parents Eugene and Zimmie Tyson Sumner; sister, Polly Sumner Brinson.
Pallbearers will be Nick Bauer, Mac Holbert, Del Wade James, Troy James, Derek Poarch, Jeff Veal, and Harley Wood.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to his loving caretakers; Regency Hospice, SNS, Holley, Sharon, Shirley, MeCee, Christy, and the Late Lisa Thornton.

My heart is heavy for yall but praise God Mr.Sumner is with Jesus. He showed so much love to everyone and I will miss him. My sister Linda sends her love also. She lives out of town. I have three grandchildren that I keep so I won’t be able to make the service. Prayers and love 🙏❤
